Large shower heads like Dornbracht RainSky and Hansgrohe Raindance Rainmaker, the Rain type ceiling shower heads remain the most desirable. With the most water coverage, they produce different types of 'rain' while mixing water with air and light. These are the most luxury shower heads you can buy and, of course, the most expensive ones. This type of shower head is actually a very technologically advanced electronic balance module that controls large water flows and requires built-in installation.
The RainSky E ceiling mounted showerhead demands large size bathroom. Another Sieger design, it turns water into pure pleasure. Over 32" wide (820mm), RainSky E overhead shower is designed to bring the "[rain] clouds from the sky into our homes", literally.
Dornbracht's most recent addition JustRain shower head caters to smaller bathroom space and is only 16" wide (400mm) and priced accordingly less at $2,000. JustRain stands up for its name - rain in all forms and rain only. The sensation of rain is achieved to the fullest.
This massaging shower head is from Hansgrohe, almost 2 feet (24") in diameter. Just like the RainSky, the Raindance Rainmaker Imperial Shower mixes water with air and light creating different 'rain' types, and is designed to give your body complete relaxation with 3-Whirl massage and 358 No-Clog spray channels. Requires ceiling flush mount installation.
Still no less desirable are the Rain Dome type round ceiling or wall-mount showerheads. They are installed as regular showerheads. The Rain Domes got larger, in fact, as large as 14" diameter showerhead can be purchased from Hansgrohe.
Hansgrohe Downpour Air Royale 14-in shower head may be the largest rain dome shower head that is currently available on the market. Simple contemporary design provides best aesthetics for a modern shower.
KWC Rain One Eighty is another large round showerhead of the rain dome type that is one of the best. Buy it as ceiling-mount with arm or wall-mount with arm. It's 8 1/2" in diameter, has 180 water outlets and can swivel 35°. As most KWC shower heads it is self-cleaning thanks to KWC JetClean technology.
The idea of having larger showering surface to provide more water coverage has been materialized in some new interesting shapes and functions. For example, Kohler has its own version of Rain Dome - the square WaterTile Panel which is actually a multiple head shower. Grohe came up with a double shower head that is also moving up and down.
Kohler new K-8030 WaterTile Rain overhead showering panel comes with 54-nozzle. With its clean look it can be an easy fit in any custom application and decor space. Sized as 9-7/8" or 251mm square. Price is $337. Available in the 3rd quarter of 2006.
Grohe Freehander Dual Shower Head
Grohe Freehander can be converted from the double shower head into two body-spray jets in a single movement. Its 22" lever pivots 180 degrees and carries two heads that can be rotated a full 360 degree each. With all this flexibility, the Freehander can be used for "the individual body parts massage or a very pleasurable shower experience". It can also conserve water by switching to a reduced flow setting on one head, and shutting off completely the other head. Buy this Grohe shower head for the price from $410 to $565.
While the size has been definitely a major consideration... lately, the designer's focus has been shifting away from the size and to the shape. Lacava has one of the most comprehensive collections of modern contemporary shower heads we've seen. The star-shaped, the square-shaped and the 'embraced' shower heads are only few examples of the latest innovative designs available. And, of course, the Waterfall showerhead is one of our favorites.
This Star-shaped beauty is Lacava ceiling mounted stationary rain shower head with arm, from the Minimal collection. It's 9" in diameter. Price starts at $1,226.
Lacava Square Showerhead is another trendy design equipped with 144 jets. It's a quite large 8" square head that can be tilted. Priced from $995.
This shower head is a part of the Embrace bathroom collection. It bends around to extend 15 1/4 inches from the wall and is actually much larger than it looks on the picture. Price starts at $440.

The slim reaching spout can be wall mounted without the distraction controls can impose on the form, while the lever sits conveniently in reach on the vanity. It also gives a freedom, allowing the spout to convey its function without distraction, while freeing the control unit to blend the slim reach of the spout with the round body of the drain cover. Moving now to the bathroom furniture, Ceramica Flaminia has designed an integrated bathroom system that turns the room into a single unit of modern functionality. The One bathroom features an inset toilet, bidet and sink. The mechanics are all in built, and leave only the bowls and flush controls gently rising from the surface of the bespoke units. The One bathroom series uses a slight overhang to define each bowl and contrast the slight rise above the surface. The gently curving bowls stand out from any surface, yet elevate the units into a single bespoke bathroom furnishing. The new Italian trends take function and beauty to new levels by freeing bathroom fixtures of their previous restrictions and instead applying that function to the bathroom as a whole.
The new trend is emerging - kitchen is becoming an entertainment hub within the home. The newest designs in prep sinks and bar sinks help to achieve this. The prep sinks and bar sinks were always present. However, as kitchen trends are changing, they are finding a new purpose - these sinks are now also gathering places for guests. They are becoming a focal point in the kitchen.
You now find them in some rather untraditional places, on an island or peninsula. The prime location and versatile functionality allow these sinks to also serve as an entertainment hot spot. Drinks and appetizers are easily served from these sinks.
The below prep and bar sinks have been chosen for their great design - they are as beautiful as they are functional. We aren't talking about the common small round and square bar sinks. The Elkay Island undermount sink (ISLAND3828), shown below, should be installed on the custom oversized island or peninsula. Make sure to provide access to the sink from at least three sides to take advantage of the unique 360 degree swivel faucet. It measures 38" x 28" and is priced at $2,368.30. The centralized faucet location is unlike any other sink available. This sink is a must have for the busy kitchen.
Kohler Trough sink
We have established that installing a prep sink improves your efficiency and serves as an entertainment sink as well. It is a "great place to chill a bottle of wine". Of course, it has got to be very accessible, so location is everything. Kohler offers an entire range of bar sinks and prep sinks that would also be great for entertainment purposes. Their collection is available in many sizes and several interesting shapes. Here's an interesting idea from Kohler that we really appreciate; to install a narrow but long prep sink with faucets at each end. The dueling faucets double the functionality and provide even more usable work space.
As it says on Kohler's website, "The sink creates a centerpiece for the kitchen," says Rhys Lewis, Director of Food & Beverage at The American Club. "It allows anyone, whether you’re enjoying a glass of wine, or whether you’re involved in food prep, to have access to the sink." This interesting sink from Franke presents a different idea about the entertainment sinks. The sculptural contours accomodate a staging area for wet foods. The organic shape supports a bowl for holding foods as you work with them. This keeps counters clean.

Whether it is a handheld or a regular shower, the square shower heads are in trend right now. So far, we’ve spotted only two faucet manufacturers that have started making these:
Swiss KWC makes KWC QBIX and KWC QBIX-ART Hand showers.
US Graff Faucets have introduced the Manhattan Square Head Shower.
We expect other brands to join the trend. Let’s wait and see ...

There's an interesting article on Elkay's website about the Residential Faucet Trends. Written by Joel Williams, it clearly shows that the approach to faucet design today is to make it a centerpiece of the kitchen or bathroom - "the water appliance that rises above it all". Besides discussing finishes and features, the article prompts for several important visual characteristics of today's faucets that help create this new trend...
- Minimalist geometry - simple curves, straight lines and symmetry creates clean contemporary look... The minimalism is in, "anything 'fussy' is out'...
- More substantial in sizes - with larger diameters and rectangular shapes, faucets are more substantial than ever
- Taller faucets - they draw more attention
Of course, this doesn't mean that traditional faucets aren't in demand... but the contemporary design is what's really booming now...
Indeed, Elkay's opinion is echoed by many faucet manufacturers - they thrive to create the most minimalist but still very functional faucets. Some good examples from well- and not-so-well-known manufacturers:
